Description of the training
“Rethinking Journalism” is a seven-day training session on peace journalism and conflict reporting that will bring together 32 young journalists and media makers from Europe, the Middle East and North Africa in Berlin, Germany from 14 to 21 September, 2014. The project is organised by the European Youth Press in cooperation with Youthpress Germany, FEJS Latvija, Youthpress Austria, Media Association for Peace Lebanon, AJMEC Tunisia and ONAuBiH Bosnia and Herzegovina

The aim of the training session is for the participants to familiarise themselves with the concepts of conflict-sensitive journalism and peace journalism. These concepts have been developed to facilitate reporting about conflicts and the representation of different interests in societies in a more solution-oriented manner. They further intend to help journalists avoid stereotypes, prejudices, and the escalation of conflicted situations through the use of self-reflection. The project wants to stress the role of a free and independent press as well as balanced, in-depth reporting

This training session aims to give the participants insights and knowledge in the field of conflict-sensitive journalism and peace journalism and to strengthen their intercultural skills through learning from and alongside each other and actively contribute to the contents of the exchange

During the training the participants will analyse existing news and reports about conflicts and define tendencies in today’s conflict reporting. They will debate what ideal journalistic ethics and balanced reports on conflicts should look like and will have the opportunity to learn from each other, as well as from seasoned speakers and experts who have extensive experience from conflict areas. In addition to the theoretical aspects of the training session, the participants will produce reports for an online magazine in small groups, that will be widely distributed through the network of the European Youth Press, reaching some 60,000 young journalists in Europe and neighboring regions

Who can apply
We are looking for participants who are legal residents of Germany, Austria, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon and between 18-30 years old. Applicants should have a working proficiency in English and the possibility to prove this with a university/language course certificate or a copy of courses taken on request

The applicants should have a proven interest in the topic of the training session and are either students in journalism and communication studies and/or have worked as journalists. In addition, they should be interested in intercultural exchange with other young people from neighboring regions
Applications by people from within minorities are especially encouraged
